Key dates
- March 8, 2015Bar Rescue episode “Bromancing the Stone” airs — Jon Taffer's rescue of Sandbar Sports Grill, relaunched as Hot Rock Bar and Grille, filmed earlier.
The rescue
Jon Taffer relaunched Sandbar Sports Grill as Hot Rock Bar and Grille.
Sandbar Sports Grill rejected the Hot Rock name and reverted to its original name. It was closed for about a year after a kitchen fire in 2020 before reopening in April 2021.
What happened next
The relaunched bar initially earned hundreds of thousands of dollars a month, but the owners disliked the Hot Rock Bar and Grille name Taffer had chosen. They removed the new sign and reverted to the original Sandbar Sports Grill name. In 2020 the bar closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, initially offering takeout only; a kitchen fire days later caused smoke damage throughout the restaurant and kept it closed for about a year. The owners repaired the damage, improved the interior and added outdoor seating, and the bar reopened in April 2021. It remains open in Coconut Grove, with ratings of 3.5 stars on Yelp and 4.2 stars on Google, though it posts on Facebook only sporadically.
